Mount Buller is a popular ski resort located in the Australian state of Victoria, just 208km north-east of Melbourne. It is situated within the Alpine National Park and is the closest skiing destination to Melbourne. Mount Buller's peak rises to over 1,800 meters, making it the third-highest mountain in Victoria. The mountain range was discovered in the 1860s, with the first documented descent on skis taking place in 1949 by Norwegian ski instructor Kandahar Nygaard.
The resort has a long history, having been established in 1949 as a destination for skiing enthusiasts. The first ski lift was installed in 1954, with the resort continuously expanding and improving since then. Now, Mount Buller boasts 22 lifts and over 80 runs catering to all levels of skiing and snowboarding experience. The resort has a lively village with a range of accommodations, shops, and restaurants.
Mount Buller is also known for its cultural significance in the indigenous communities of the area. It is a sacred site for the Taungurung people, who call the mountain "Bullai." The Taungurung locals have a deep spiritual connection to the mountain, and the region is rich in indigenous heritage, which can be explored by taking a guided tour. In addition to skiing, visitors can also enjoy snowshoeing, tobogganing, and snowplay activities in the area.
Aside from winter sports, Mount Buller is also a popular summer destination. The resort offers hiking and mountain biking trails through the Victorian Alps, offering stunning views and a range of challenges for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can also take a scenic chairlift ride and enjoy a barbecue lunch at the mountain's summit.
