Asti was founded by the Romans in the 2nd century BC and has since been ruled by various kingdoms and empires. Today, visitors can experience Asti's storied past by visiting landmarks such as the 13th-century Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the medieval Palazzo Mazzetti, and the 11th-century Romanesque church of San Pietro in Consavia. Asti's wine production is another element that attracts visitors. The region is home to some of the world's most respected wine varieties such as Barbera d'Asti, Moscato d'Asti, and Asti Spumante, which are cultivated in vineyards located outside of the city. Every year, the city hosts The Douja d'Or wine competition, where thousands of wines are tasted and judged. In addition to its vibrant history and wine production, Asti is also a culinary destination. The city prides itself on its traditional Piedmontese cuisine, with dishes like bagna cauda and agnolotti, a stuffed pasta made with meat or vegetables. The city's Saturday market, held in the Piazza del Palio, offers visitors an opportunity to sample and purchase local foods, crafts, and goods.
