Jeddah, one of Saudi Arabia's most vibrant cities, is an essential destination for every tourist visiting the Kingdom. Situated on the Red Sea coast, Jeddah is the commercial hub of the country and has served as a gateway for pilgrims travelling to Mecca for centuries. The city's historical significance dates back to the pre-Islamic period when it was a port of call for trade caravans from Yemen and other parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Jeddah's long history has left behind numerous cultural and historic landmarks that bear witness to the city's rich past. One notable example is Al-Balad (the old town), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which boasts a collection of traditional buildings and markets dating back to the 7th century. The district features several souks (markets), including Souq Al Alawi, that offer all kinds of traditional goods, such as perfumes, jewelry, textiles, and other handicrafts. Other landmarks in Jeddah include the Makkah Gate, which used to be the main city entrance; the historic district of Al-Shamasiyyah and its numerous mosques, and the Jeddah Corniche, a long seaside promenade popular among locals and tourists. Modern Jeddah is also fascinating, as it is home to many modern architectural wonders, including the Kingdom Tower, the tallest building in Saudi Arabia and the 4th tallest in the world. Additionally, the city is home to the Jeddah Fountain, known as the King Fahd Fountain, which is the highest fountain in the world and a must-see when visiting the city. For a look at Jeddah's contemporary art scene, a visit to the Jeddah Sculpture Museum or the Athr Gallery could be an excellent idea.
